CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
Shipments from mainland U.S.A. do not
pass through customs tax free in Puerto Rico. Household goods shipments and
vehicles will be subject to excise taxes. Goods that will attract excise taxes
include, but are not limited to:
- Regular furniture
- Books and clothing
- Telecommunication equipment
- Computers
- Any sporting good items
- Musical instruments
- Any new items
- Any electrical items
- Carpeting
- Cameras
- Toys
Items deemed non-essential are taxed at
a rate of 6.6% of the value that the customer declares.
PROHIBITED ITEMS
- Firearms (must state serial
number)
- All firearms imported with
household goods will be confiscated upon delivery by local authorities and
will not be released to the owner until owner has a license and proper
approval from authorities
- Weapons highly regulated
- Explosives
- Alcoholic beverages will be
confiscated by local authorities
- Pornographic material
- Lottery tickets
- Endangered species and monkeys
- Plants and vegetables
- Jewelry, currency, coin collection or
items of extraordinary value
- Drugs (medicine must be accompanied
with a prescription or statement from personal physician)
MOTOR VEHICLES
- Personal items must NOT be contained
in the automobile
- All autos subject to physical
inspection
- Autos are subject to tax and Customs
duties
- Documents required:
- Original Title Certificate
- Original Registration
- Copy of Customer's Driver's License
(with Social Security number) stating physical and postal address in Puerto
Rico
- Notarized letter from lienholder
showing VIN number, model, make and copy of title
- Commercial invoice for vans and
pickups
- Customs Form 3299 (if originating
from foreign country)
- Certificate of compliance with U.S.
Federal EPA and DOT regulations (Form 3520), if car imported from foreign
country
- Autos moving on Government Bill of
Lading's also require:
- Travel Order and Government Bill of
Lading
- Job identification (with
picture)
- Keys (including trunk key) must be
provided to Destination Agent prior to arrival of the auto
- Vehicles cannot be removed from
pier until all excise taxes, license fees, duties, etc. have been
paid
- Customs duties are to be paid if
auto is sold within one year after import
